A casino dealer at The Star in Sydney has been charged with allegedly rigging roulette games, alongside a suspected accomplice, in a scheme police say netted the pair $25,000.
The NSW Police’s organised crime casino and racing unit began investigating the alleged operation in October 2023. A statement released by police on Friday revealed that their inquiry led to the identification of a 23-year-old casino employee and a 22-year-old associate.
Police will allege that the pair manipulated the real money roulette game by placing or altering bets after the ball had landed on a number. This tactic was reportedly used several times in September and October, earning the duo a total of $25,000 in illicit winnings.
Both men have been charged with facilitating conduct that corrupts the outcome of a betting event and attempting to obtain a benefit through dishonest means at the casino. They are due to face the Downing Centre Local Court on November 1, 2024.
It is the latest scandal to engulf Star Sydney following their license to operate being suspended earlier this year, with grave concerns about money laundering and counter terrorism failings.
Star Entertainment Group, which operates The Star, declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal proceedings.
