What is live dealer roulette?
Live dealer roulette is essentially a hybrid of standard online play and the traditional games you would find in a brick and mortar (b&m) casino.
The mode of play is much the same as a run-of-the-mill Internet game – that is, we make bets and take actions by clicking on certain icons within a casino software interface. But where regular online roulette uses an animated wheel that produces results based on a complex Random Number Generators (RNGs), live dealer games use an actual, physical wheel and ball, operated by a human croupier in real time.
All live dealer games feature real time video streaming so we don’t miss a single move. And for the social element generally lacking with web gambling, there’s a live chat so we can interact with our fellow players and the dealer through live chat. With the stay-at-home luxury of basic Internet games, and the authenticity and banter of old-school land casinos, it is no real surprise live roulette is making waves worldwide.
Live dealer providers set up their live dealer games in studios which mirror brick and mortar casinos where the croupiers are streamed in real time. They hire a large professional gaming staff including dealers, camera crew to film and stream the games, IT managers to deal with any technical problems, and an adjudicator in case of any disputes which arise between players and croupiers.
How to play live dealer roulette
The great thing about live dealer roulette is there is really nothing new to learn. If you already know how to play standard game of online roulette, or if you have ever hit the devil’s wheel at a real-world casino, then you’re good to go.
There are American double-zero tables, as well as single-zero European and French layouts, with all their respective odds, payouts, and rules. As live players, we execute actions in pretty much the same way as we would in normal Internet roulette – by clicking and dragging chips to certain sections of the betting layout in order to make wagers.
The only major difference is that, due to the multi-player element (although there are single-player live dealer games, too), we do not always have an infinite amount of time between spins; the croupier will call ‘no more bets’, as per tradition, at which point the wagering for that turn is closed.
We are offered both a traditional and casino view of the live video feed of the dealer and wheel: the traditional view displays the croupier and wheel in a small central box at the top of our screens, with statistics and rules to either side of the video, and the betting area (table layout) below. The casino view, on the other hand, gives a true feel to how we watch the streaming video: our whole screen is akin to what we would see and how we would play at a land-based casino; with the dealer spinning the wheel, and us standing around the table.
Within the interface, we can choose our own coloured chips, view the results of previous spins, information about the croupier, current statistics, and change options such as video quality, sound, and even create our own auto-betting function.
It’s important to note that due to the costs involved for online casinos running live dealer games, only real money play is available, and not the free practice play we see from RNG roulette games. You can, however, watch how the games runs without betting, in order to get a feel for how long you have in between spins, and other elements of the game. Choose your dealer and a multi-player table, and watch the live action.
Most casinos will close your window after a period of inactivity, though (around 10 minutes).
RNG software VS true randomness
The key difference between live dealer games and standard online roulette is that the outcome of every live spin constitutes a genuine random event, rather than a computerised simulation determined by algorithms.
While every RNG used in high-quality online casino games is thoroughly tested and analysed to ensure it performs fairly, the results produced by these programs are not truly random, if we get technical about it.
This is because, regardless of actual performance, an RNG (or a ‘pseudo-random’ program, in the case of casino games) uses a precise mathematical formula for each spin. So while the run of numbers that show up are random for all intents and purposes, strictly speaking they cannot be considered as genuinely random.
Some theorists claim this makes standard Web games more predictable, while others say it compromises – corrupts, even – the chance element. For all the talk, however, neither case has been definitively proven, and RNG-based roulette tables (such as those developed by Microgaming, the industry leaders) continue to perform to the highest standards. Nevertheless, the truth is this: for the purest roulette on the Net, you cannot go past live dealers.
